Food and Drink Industry Standards

Sector Performance Standards, also known as National Occupational Standards (NOS), provide the food and drink industry with a breakdown of the skills and knowledge needed to carry out a wide range of different functions in the workplace.

They describe what an individual needs to do, know and understand in order to carry out a particular job role or function.

This section of the ImproveSkills website provides more information on the benefits of Standards, how we develop them and how you can take part in consultation.

Standards are free to the public and do not belong to a Qualification framework. They are accessible to companies throughout the UK and provide employers with a useful reference tool when:

Developing employee appraisalsDeveloping employee appraisals
Identifying areas of development for employees
Considering career progression routesConsidering career progression routes
Creating job recruitment materialCreating job recruitment material
Writing job descriptionsWriting job descriptions
Supporting employees moving into new job roles

Improve uses Standards to create Units for a variety of nationally recognised Qualifications, including families of Improve Proficiency Qualifications (IPQs) and Improve Vocational Qualifications (IVQs), and Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs). These Qualifications form the basis of Apprenticeships.

Qualifications play a key role in skills development for companies throughout the food and drink industry. It is important that here at Improve we work closely with employers and technical experts to ensure that the Standards we develop for the industry are accurate and represent all sectors, regions and types of companies.

Improve has developed various suites of Standards, which cover different areas of the industry and a wide range of functions. The Standards Index details the Standards that have been developed to date. These cover the following areas:
