Following two very successful FST working groups which took place this month, Improve and its partners are developing four action plans to address the shortage of FSTs. These action plans will:
• Improve the image of the industry and awareness of the opportunities available to work in the industry
• Provide a gap analysis of the demand for FSTs against the current supply
• Address the proven inaccessibility to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) - it has been shown that large organisations do not have the same problems as SMEs finding FSTs to fill vacant positions
• Develop solutions for the inclusion of practical applications of Food Science and food processes into the National Schools Curriculum
These action plans will be discussed further and evaluated at a final working group meeting which is set to take place in summer 2009.
