Improve works in partnership on Productivity and Competitiveness (PAC) programme

23.10.2008

Through joint working, Improve is securing the future of the UK manufacturing and engineering industries with the PAC programme. The Programme has been formed to create a different approach to lean manufacturing and is specifically designed to help smaller companies. Improve is working on this project as part of the Manufacturing Skills Alliance (MSA) along with the other SSCs, Semta, Cogent and Proskills.

PAC is particularly important for the UK engineering, manufacturing and process industries so that they can compete globally. The MSA is heading a major initiative to help these industries by:

  • Encouraging engineering professionals to become PAC Analysts.

  • Creating a network of training providers for the NVQ in Business Improvement Techniques (BI-T).

  • Helping UK businesses make the transformation to compete in the global economy.

These three areas will benefit many different work groups. You can click on the links below to read information guides in full:

A guide for analysts
This is for people wanting to start their career as an analyst and help the UK economy. It involves working with various businesses and training providers to produce and maintain a business change. The benefits include broadening your individual skill base and having a licence to practice from one or more of the Skills Alliance Academies. PAC training takes six days, with fast-track training if you have previous experience.

A guide for training providers
Training providers work with staff members who themselves will work with PAC analysts. The benefits include additional revenue and Government funding, as well as a larger client base. As a training provider, you will carry out an analysis of engineering, manufacturing and process businesses, and provide training for selected staff to take an NVQ in BI-T.

A guide for business
This is an opportunity for engineering, manufacturing and process businesses of any size to work towards business improvement. The benefits include increased production capacity and reduced direct labour cost, as well as reduced machine downtime and a sustainable year-on-year improvement. You will be guided by a PAC analyst through a six to nine month programme.
