These qualifications offer a new solution specifically tailored to the needs of employers. They are shorter and more work-focused than traditional ESOL qualifications, and give learners practical English skills in essential workplace subjects, such as health and safety, and customer service.
Employers benefit from these new qualifications as communication is improved and this can have a positive impact on productivity.
Using funding from the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS), Improve has worked closely with Asset Skills and other sector skills councils to develop vocabulary lists to complement the learning programmes for the ESOL for Work qualifications and other ESOL qualifications delivered in workplace settings.
The vocabulary lists are designed to help those who are learning English to better understand some of the specific work terms, jargon, acronyms and abbreviations that they may come across in the workplace. The lists include a brief explanation of each word or term and have been formatted to be used like a workbook, so that learners can add their own notes either on an electronic version or a printed copy.
