Apprentices who have been made redundant whilst doing an Apprenticeship can spend up to 6-months in a full-time 'off-the-job' setting to complete their Apprenticeship, or be given time to find anther job.
Guidance on these recommendations is available and outlines how apprentices faced with redundancy can continue to work towards their Apprenticeship or NVQ in Food Manufacture Assessment Strategy.
The NAS general guidance to training providers is based on a temporary approach, and described below are the new measures being adopted for the food and drink industry. Further details can be found in the Redundant Apprentices document. Some proxy qualifications act as an exemption for Key Skills.
The achievement of Key Skills will remain a Framework requirement. However, Improve will permit an extension of the existing Key Skills relaxation, even if the qualifications were achieved more than five years before registering for the Apprenticeship. Learners who do require Key Skills can achieve this 'off-the-job'.
It is not possible for the Competence Component (NVQ) to be achieved without the learner being observed performing whilst at work. However, it may be possible for apprentices who might be made available to find an acceptable alternative assessment method to complete their NVQ without compromising the NVQ Code of Practice.
It is acceptable for the Knowledge Component (Technical Certificate) of the Framework to be achieved in 'off the job' learning situations. It is also acceptable for the Knowledge Component of the NVQ to be achieved off-the-job.
This requirement can be gained off-the-job.
